- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The shapefile MTCokingCoaDeposits represents locations of coking coal deposits in the State of Montana in the United States based on map locations described in Fisher (1909), Calvert (1909, 1912a, 1912b), Lord and others (1913), and Combo and others (1945). The shapefile format can be viewed using ArcGIS or any software package that supports this data format.
- Purpose:
-
The shapefile is intended for use in a GIS project to display the deposits of coking coal in the State of Montana.

The original information used to create digital representations of coking coal deposits was published by Fisher (1909), Calvert (1909, 1912a, 1912b), Lord and others (1913), and Combo and others (1945). Digital shapefiles were created by Michael H. Trippi of the U.S. Geological Survey.

The horizontal accuracy of the features is based on the accuracy of the original maps used, which is unknown. Some inaccuracy may also come from distortion that inevitably occurs when georeferencing scanned images of maps.

Online publication (Fisher,1909) was downloaded and a screenshot of the map of the Great Falls coal field (plate II) was saved as a JPEG file. The JPEG file was added to an ArcMap project and georeferenced, then the area underlain by workable coal was digitized and saved as shapefile MTCokingCoalFields.

Township, range, and section location of the Mace Mine near Maiden, Mt. was obtained from Calvert (1909). Latitude and longitude values for this mine were determined using the National Map Advanced Viewer website (<https://viewer.nationalmap.gov/advanced-viewer/>) with the Bureau of Land Management's Public Land Survey System (PLSS) boundaries displayed. The latitude and longitude values were entered into a spreadsheet and saved as a CSV file. The CSV file was added to an ArcMap project, and the point location of the mine was displayed. A circular polygon about 2 miles in diameter was drawn with the point location as its center and saved as a feature in shapefile MTCokingCoalFields.
