Abstract:
The shapefile UTCokingCoalMines represents locations of coking coal mines in the State of Utah in the United States based on map locations described in Utah Division of Oil, Gas, and Mining (2015), Tabet and Wakefield (2006), and Berryhill and Averitt (1951). The shapefile format can be viewed using ArcGIS or any software package that supports this data format.
Purpose:
The shapefile is intended for use in a GIS project to display the mines of coking coal in the State of Utah.

The JPEG file was added to an ArcMap project and georeferenced, then the area of the Aberdeen (Keniworth) coal mine was digitized and saved as a feature in shapefile UTCokingCoalMines. Three small areas of coal beds that are >4 ft thick (pink areas) east and southeast of the town of Mount Pleasant were digitized and saved as Mount Pleasant coal field features in the shapefile.

The location of the Jones mine on Coal Creek, seven miles southeast of Cedar City, Utah, was determined from BerryhillAveritt. An approximate point location for the Jones mine was selected on the TabetWakefield map at the northwestern edge of the area of coalbeds that are >4 ft thick (pink area) in the canyon just southeast of Cedar City. A circle about 1 km in diameter was drawn with the point location as its center, and saved as a feature in shapefile UTCokingCoalMines.
