Description:
Abstract:
The shapefile WYCokingCoalDeposits represents locations of coking coal deposits in the State of Wyoming in the United States based on map locations described in Berryhill and Averitt (1951), Rich and others (1988), and Jones and others (2011). The shapefile format can be viewed using ArcGIS or any software package that supports this data format.
Purpose:
The shapefile is intended for use in a GIS project to display the deposits of coking coal in the State of Wyoming.

The original information used to create digital representations of coking coal deposits was published by Berryhill and Averitt (1951), Rich and others (1988), and Jones and others (2011). Digital shapefiles were created by Michael H. Trippi of the U.S. Geological Survey.

Process_Description:
Online publication (Rich and others,1988) was downloaded and a screenshot of the map showing the extent of mine workings at Cambria at the time of Stone (1912) (figure 6) was saved as a JPEG file. The JPEG file was added to an ArcMap project and georeferenced, then the area of the extent of mine workings was digitized and saved as shapefile WYCokingCoalDeposits.

Process_Description:
The latitude and longitude values of the Superior A Mine (as described in Berryhill and Averitt, 1951) was determined from an aerial photo on Google Maps, entered into a spreadsheet, and saved as a CSV file. The CSV file was added to an ArcMap project and the point location of the mine was displayed. A circular polygon was then drawn with the point at its center, and saved as a feature in shapefile WYCokingCoalDeposits.

Online publication (Jones and others,2011) was downloaded and a screenshot of the map showing the narrow belt of coal-bearing rocks from the Upper Cretaceous (including the Frontier Fm) about 12 miles north of Kemmerer, Wyo. (as described in Berryhill and Averitt, 1951) was saved as a JPEG file. The JPEG file was added to an ArcMap project and georeferenced, then the area of the extent of Upper Cretaceous rocks was digitized and saved as a feature in the shapefile WYCokingCoalDeposits.
