Description:
Abstract:
The shapefile COCokingCoalFields represents locations of coking coal fields in the State of Colorado in the United States based on map locations of these fields shown in Goolsby and others (1979), Carroll (2006), and the US-Mining.com (2017) website. The shapefile format can be viewed using ArcGIS or any software package that supports this data format.
Purpose:
The shapefile is intended for use in a GIS project to display the locations of coking coal fields in the State of Colorado.

Online publication (Carroll2006) was downloaded and a screenshot of the map of Colorado coal quality (Plate 2) was saved as a JPEG file. The JPEG file was added to an ArcMap project and georeferenced, then areas of past coking coal production in the Carbondale, Crested Butte, Somerset, Mancos, Durango, and Raton coal fields were digitized and saved as shapefile COCokingCoalFields.

Online publication (GoolsbyOthers) was downloaded and a screenshot of map B of plate 3 (Coal Rank Map of the Uinta Coal Region) was saved as a JPEG file. The JPEG file was added to an ArcMap project and georeferenced, then two parts of the Grand Hogback coal field where the calorific value (CV) was >12,500 Btu/lb were digitized and saved as features in the shapefile.

Process_Description:
The locations of coal mines near Norwood and Rico, Colorado that are briefly mentioned by Averitt (1966, locations not given) were found using the mine lookup page on the US-Mining.com (2017) website. Approximate latitude and longitude values for the point locations of the mines were determined using Google Maps. These values were entered into a spreadsheet which was imported into ArcMap and used to display the point locations of the mines. Circles about 1 mile in diameter were drawn with the point locations as their centers for each mine, and saved as features in shapefile COCokingCoalFields.
